Dampers for Sponge Iron Rotary Kilns

Butterfly, multi louver, inlet vane, diverter and guillotine dampers in MS and stainless steel. In sponge iron rotary kilns the gas is sponge iron kiln off-gas, which decides the type, the media or material, and where the fan sits.

The process

Direct reduction of iron ore in a rotary kiln produces a hot off-gas full of fines that passes through an after-burner chamber and usually a waste heat boiler before the ESP and the ID fan. Shell air fans along the kiln inject air through ports, and shell cooling fans protect the refractory. Hard, continuous duties.

The gas

Rotary kiln off-gas after the after-burner chamber and waste heat boiler, carrying iron ore and coal fines. Among the harder duties for an ID fan: hot, heavily dust laden and continuous.

Information needed to select or quote

  1. Gas volume and temperature. Actual flow at the inlet, normal and upset temperature, moisture.
  2. Dust or pollutant. Inlet loading, particle size distribution, whether it is abrasive, sticky, hygroscopic or combustible; for gases, the species and concentration.
  3. Required outlet. The emission limit or clean gas concentration the unit must meet.
  4. Site. Available space and height, material of construction preferences, and how the collected material is to be discharged.
