Mist Eliminator & Knock-down Vessel for Waste Incinerators

Separates entrained liquid droplets from a vapour or gas stream, ahead of a compressor, a fan or a stack.. In waste incinerators the gas at the fan is incinerator flue gas, and that sets the blade form, the material and the drive.

The process

Hazardous, medical and municipal waste incinerators hold the furnace under draft with an ID fan that sits after the quench, scrubber, bag filter and carbon injection. The gas at the fan is wet and acidic. Combustion air and secondary air blowers serve the primary and secondary chambers.

The gas at the fan

Flue gas after the quench and scrubber is wet, acidic and still carries fine dust. The fan is in stainless steel or lined construction, with a shaft seal and drains, sized at the saturated density.

Selection for this duty

ConstructionStainless steel or lined vessel with mesh pad or vane pack sized for the droplet load
Density at the fanAt about 200°C the gas density is close to 0.75 kg/m³, 62% of standard air. Pressure developed and power drawn fall in the same ratio, so the selection is made at this density and the motor is checked at cold start.

Information needed to select or quote

  1. Gas volume and temperature. Actual flow at the inlet, normal and upset temperature, moisture.
  2. Dust or pollutant. Inlet loading, particle size distribution, whether it is abrasive, sticky, hygroscopic or combustible; for gases, the species and concentration.
  3. Required outlet. The emission limit or clean gas concentration the unit must meet.
  4. Site. Available space and height, material of construction preferences, and how the collected material is to be discharged.
