Roof Extractor for Generator and Engine Rooms

An axial fan in a weatherproof cowl mounted on an inclined or flat roof, exhausting hot air from the ridge of a factory shed.. In generator and engine rooms the gas at the fan is clean ambient air, and that sets the blade form, the material and the drive.

The process

Engine rooms need ventilation sized for the radiator heat and the combustion air, with silencers on the intake and exhaust openings where the site has noise limits.

The gas at the fan

Clean ambient air at site temperature. Density is close to standard and the fan is selected on efficiency and noise with no allowance for dust or corrosion.

Selection for this duty

ConstructionAxial fans in weatherproof cowls, or supply and exhaust units with filters as the air quality requires
Density at the fanAt about 35°C the gas density is close to 1.15 kg/m³, 95% of standard air. Pressure developed and power drawn fall in the same ratio, so the selection is made at this density and the motor is checked at cold start.

Information needed to select or quote

  1. Gas volume and temperature. Actual flow at the inlet, normal and upset temperature, moisture.
  2. Dust or pollutant. Inlet loading, particle size distribution, whether it is abrasive, sticky, hygroscopic or combustible; for gases, the species and concentration.
  3. Required outlet. The emission limit or clean gas concentration the unit must meet.
  4. Site. Available space and height, material of construction preferences, and how the collected material is to be discharged.
