Hot Air Fan for Hot Dip Galvanising Lines

Circulates or supplies air at elevated temperature to a dryer, oven or kiln. In hot dip galvanising lines the gas at the fan is acid fume, and that sets the blade form, the material and the drive.

The process

Galvanising lines have acid pickling tanks that fume, a flux dryer, and a zinc kettle that emits fume at dipping. The pickling fume goes through a scrubber in PP-FRP, the kettle fume to a bag filter, and the dryer needs a hot air fan.

The gas at the fan

Fume from pickling, acid handling or reactor vents, corrosive and often wet. PP-FRP, FRP or rubber lined construction, with the motor outside the gas path.

Selection for this duty

Blade formBackward curved or aerofoil for the best efficiency on clean gas
Material of constructionPP-FRP, FRP or MS rubber lined, with the motor outside the gas path
Drive and bearingsDirect coupled or belt driven; belt drive where the duty point may need tuning at site
Also specifiedCasing drain at the lowest point
Density at the fanAt about 40°C the gas density is close to 1.13 kg/m³, 94% of standard air. Pressure developed and power drawn fall in the same ratio, so the selection is made at this density and the motor is checked at cold start.

Circulates or supplies air at elevated temperature to a dryer, oven or kiln. Selected at the hot density with the shaft and bearing arrangement built for continuous hot running. Client-stated blade types for the Hot Air Fan in general: Backward curved and backward inclined.

Information needed to select or quote

  1. Duty point. Volume flow and static pressure at the fan inlet, with the gas density and temperature or the conditions to derive it.
  2. Operating conditions. Site altitude, normal operating temperature and continuous or intermittent duty.
  3. Gas stream. Dust loading and particle size, corrosive species, moisture, upset temperature and any tendency of the material to deposit on the impeller.
  4. Mechanical. Rotation viewed from the drive end, discharge orientation and motor power.
